John DeFrancis

If you’re a student of Chinese and you don’t know who John DeFrancis is, you’re missing out. Dr. DeFrancis passed away a few weeks ago. An oustanding eulogy is here, at The China Beat.

I have been studying Mandarin in California for several years and have Dr. DeFrancis’ “The Chinese Language: Fact and Fantasy” and have recommended it to many people, including Chinese teachers. It’s an excellent study of the relationships between spoken and written Chinese. I am glad to find that Dr. DeFrancis lived such a long life.

I really like your blog, which I came across very recently while trying to find some information on how many Americans are really learning Chinese.
